Homeschool Wild Days

Here's the Nitty-Gritty:

Homeschool Wild Days are once a month get-togethers at a deep ecology center, featuring a science lesson, a craft, and a shared lunch. For more details, look to the right there under the photo.

Located in Herkimer County, The Shawanagunk Nature Preserve is a reasonable drive from Utica, Rome and many other places in central NY. There's a lovely little lodge on the property where we will gather to do indoor projects.

We planned it to be a once-a-month, all day affair in the hopes of making it worth the drive for your family. See contact information below for address and directions.

The basic fee is $5 per family, plus materials fees which vary monthly but are usually in the range of $4. Shawanagunk Nature Preserve is a non-profit and these fees only cover their expenses. We ask that, if you can, you would donate more.

You might consider part of the fee bringing a dish to pass for our lunch potluck/indoor picnic. No sweets, please! -- just vegetables, juices, breads, fruits, lunch meats, etc.

Wild Days are currently scheduled for Monday, April 30th, May 14th and May 28th. Each Wild Day will start at 10:30 am and run until roughly 2 PM.

Preregistration is appreciated but not required. If you show up at any time on a Wild Day we will be happy to integrate you into the current goings-on. You only must be willing to sign a legal waiver (the Preserve has no insurance) and pay the small fees once you get there.

That said, preregistration IS appreciated. We can gear the day's activities to whichever age group will be in the majority. You can download a registration form from this site and mail it back with the fee, or bring it to the Preserve on the morning of the day you wish to participate.

Programs are for all ages and homeschoolers of all faiths are welcome. Right now we have kids mostly between the ages of three and nine participating.

Once a month, homeschoolers in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties of New York escape out to a cabin in a deep ecology center, The Shawanagunk Nature Preserve, for a day of hands-on science, nature crafts, storytelling, music, a wholesome lunch, walks in the woods and discussion with fellow homeschoolers. This is your invitation to join us!

Do you wish your children could:

Learn science by reading their environment rather than by reading a textbook . . .

Develop a relationship with nature, deeply knowing and loving one place well . . .

Experience all of the hands-on fun of nature . . .

Gather, wildcraft, spot and craft from nature's bounty . . .

Watch the seasons pass in a natural, uncivilized Preserve . . . .

Spend time with other homeschoolers enjoying the simpler things in life . . .

This is their opportunity!
